Overview

Weight management refers to a medically supervised, long-term strategy for reaching and maintaining a healthier body weight. It combines dietary and exercise guidance with behavioural changes and, where appropriate, medication support. Excess weight and obesity usually develop over years, so treatment also requires patience, with gradual progress being the priority. The goal is sustainable, individually tailored change rather than short-term diets.

Common causes

Excess weight typically results from an interplay of several factors. These include a consistently higher calorie intake than expenditure, little physical activity in daily life, and a low-fibre, energy-dense diet. Genetic predisposition, lack of sleep, chronic stress and hormonal influences can also play a role. Some medications and conditions such as an underactive thyroid can additionally promote weight gain. Often several of these causes act together.

When to see a doctor

A medical assessment is advisable with a BMI of 30 or above, or 27 or above alongside conditions such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure or elevated blood lipids. Rapid, unintended weight gain or loss should also be evaluated. In case of acute warning signs such as severe chest pain, sudden shortness of breath or signs of a heart attack or stroke, call the emergency number 112 immediately. If you experience side effects from medication, contact your doctor promptly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will my private health insurance (PKV) cover the cost of GLP-1 medications?

That depends on your PKV policy and your diagnosis. Many PKV policies reimburse costs where obesity is documented. On request, we will provide you with all the necessary documentation.

How does the dose escalation work?

The dose is increased gradually over several weeks to minimise side effects. Your doctor will guide you through this process via follow-up consultations.

What about side effects?

Common side effects are nausea and digestive problems, particularly at the start. Get in touch with us at any time — we will adjust your treatment.

How long does the treatment last?

Weight management is usually a long-term treatment. Your goals and its duration will be discussed individually with your doctor.
