Overview

Women's health covers a broad range of hormonal and gynaecological topics — from contraception and cycle regulation to menopausal symptoms and common infections such as bladder or vaginal infections. Many of these concerns are benign and respond well to counselling and treatment. Hormone levels naturally fluctuate over the course of life, which can temporarily intensify or ease symptoms.

Common causes

Cycle disorders and mood changes often arise from hormonal shifts, for example during puberty, after stopping the pill, or during menopause. Stress, being over- or underweight, thyroid disorders and certain medications can further affect the cycle. Urinary tract infections are usually favoured by bacteria, and vaginal infections by a disturbed vaginal environment (yeast or bacterial imbalance). Genetic predisposition and lifestyle also play a role.

When to see a doctor

A medical evaluation is advisable for suddenly very heavy or irregular bleeding, bleeding after menopause, missed periods or persistent lower abdominal pain. Fever, flank pain or blood in the urine during a bladder infection should also be checked. For very severe, sudden lower abdominal pain with circulatory problems, fainting or suspected pregnancy outside the uterus, call the emergency number 112 immediately.
