Overview

Back pain is a very common complaint that affects almost everyone at some point in life. In most cases it is non-specific, meaning there is no serious underlying condition, and it eases on its own within a few weeks. Tension in the back muscles is often the main factor. Persistent or recurring symptoms should, however, be assessed by a doctor.

Common causes

Back pain often arises from muscular tension, one-sided strain or lack of movement. Prolonged sitting, heavy or incorrect lifting and weak core muscles are among the typical triggers. Stress and mental tension can also promote muscle tightness. Less frequently, disc problems, wear of the spine or irritated nerves are the cause. Excess weight and smoking are considered additional risk factors.

When to see a doctor

Seek medical advice if the pain lasts longer than a few weeks, gets worse or keeps returning. Warning signs include pain radiating into the legs, numbness, loss of strength, fever or unexplained weight loss. If sudden paralysis or a disturbance of bladder or bowel function occurs, this is an emergency – call the emergency number 112 immediately.
