Overview

Dermatology covers conditions of the skin, hair and nails – from common complaints such as acne, rosacea and eczema to pigment changes and fungal infections. Many skin conditions run a chronic course or occur in flare-ups and can be managed well over a longer period. For many concerns, photo-based assessment via video offers a useful initial evaluation, while some cases require an in-person examination.

Common causes

Skin problems arise from an interplay of several factors. Hormonal changes promote acne, while rosacea is influenced by triggers such as heat, sun, alcohol or spicy foods. Eczema and psoriasis often have a hereditary predisposition, aggravated by dry skin, irritants or stress. Sun exposure encourages pigment changes, and fungal or wart infections are transmitted by pathogens. Medications, allergies and skincare itself can also affect symptoms.

When to see a doctor

A medical assessment is advisable when skin changes persist, spread rapidly, itch severely, hurt, weep or keep recurring. New or changing moles (size, colour, border) deserve particular attention. Seek prompt medical help for fever with a rash, extensive blistering or signs of infection. In case of sudden swelling of the face, lips or tongue, shortness of breath or circulatory problems, call the emergency number 112 immediately.
