What you should know beforehand

Overview

The term mental health refers to emotional well-being and the ability to cope with everyday demands. Complaints such as persistent exhaustion, low mood, anxiety, sleep problems or difficulty concentrating are common and, in many cases, treatable. The course varies widely: some phases improve on their own, while others require a medical assessment, counselling or targeted treatment.

Common causes

Mental health complaints usually arise from a combination of several factors. Ongoing stress at work or in the family, distressing life events, lack of sleep and social isolation often play a role. Physical illnesses, hormonal changes, alcohol or certain medications can also affect emotional balance. A family predisposition may increase the risk. Often no single cause can be identified, but rather a combination of triggers.

When to see a doctor

A medical assessment is advisable if symptoms persist for more than about two weeks, worsen, or noticeably affect daily life, work and relationships. Warning signs include marked withdrawal, persistent hopelessness or pronounced sleep and appetite disturbances. In cases of acute suicidal thoughts or danger to yourself or others, call the emergency number 112 immediately or the crisis helpline 0800 111 0 111 (free, around the clock). Do not hesitate to seek help.
